Combat

All combats take the form of short skirmishes, where the player is fighting for total domination.

The game is played in turns. The player begins each mission with his avatar and selected characters. During his or her turn, the player issues orders to his/her units with intent to kill the opposite troops. Every unit can perform only one move (or attack after move) per turn.

All actions' results are affected by dice throws. Therefore, luck plays a role in combat and your superb strategy can be broken by an unlucky strike. That introduces the whole new layer of planning as you cannot assume your orders will have the desired effect.

The Age of Fear features three factions with unique units and capabilities:

  • The Human Kingdom's soldiers are vulnerable and have to resort to advanced tactics in order to defeat enemy without heavy loses. Abilities like Heal, Fireball or Teleportation allow for quick retreats and lighting attacks. Generally speaking, Human forces are mix of specialized units, each one with its own advantages and disadvantages.
  • The Greenskins' Horde are composed of well known evil fantasy creatures like Goblins, Orcs or Ogres. Individually they are very strong (well, maybe not Goblins..) and have distinctive bonuses; for example: Regeneration for Trolls or extra damage for Ogres. Greenskin societies are lead by Shamans who have access to spiritual magic. However, in battle, they most often resort to melee combat.
  • The Undead Legion is an army built around the dark powers of death magic. Zombies, Skeletons, Ghouls, Banshees and Vampires will be your usual allies. However, if you are powerful enough, fearsome Black Knights and foul Necromancers will join and fight beside you. The Undead Legion does not rely on individual unit strength or abilities - instead, almost every Undead can be raised again and again, slowly tearing your opponent forces to bloody pieces and raising them as mindless skeletons. Undead troops are our favorite faction!
